Valakom Grama Panchayat – Institutional History
Valakom Grama Panchayat is a local self-government institution functioning under the Muvattupuzha Block Panchayat in Ernakulam District, Kerala. It was established as part of Kerala’s Panchayati Raj system to coordinate local governance and rural development activities for the people of the region.
The headquarters of the Panchayat is located at Mekkadampu. At present, the Panchayat comprises the areas of Valakom and Vellorkunnam and is divided into 15 wards for administrative purposes.
Historical Background
Valakom is an ancient agrarian village situated in the eastern part of Muvattupuzha. The region’s growth has been largely supported by agriculture, particularly rubber cultivation, coconut farming, and other farming-based livelihoods. With the strengthening of the Panchayat governance system in Kerala during the 1950s, a representative local administration was established in Valakom. Subsequently, under the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act, the Grama Panchayat continued its functioning with greater powers and responsibilities.

Valakom Grama Panchayat Today
In recent years, the Panchayat has undertaken notable initiatives in infrastructure development, healthcare improvement, and public welfare programs. In 2025, the Panchayat organized a Development Assembly (Vikasana Sadas) to showcase the achievements and developmental progress made over the previous five years, as reported by the Government Information and Public Relations Department.
